At the Town Council meeting last Monday, the Council authorized the purchase of the property for the West Windsor extension from Mr Shu. The Town has begun planning the design of the roadway, which according to the Mayor, will be a curving road with landscaping, a traffic circle and bike trails along the road. The extension would not connect to Pecan Acres and Wellington. While I would prefer the extension not be built at all, this plan is certainly preferrable to any plan that would cram more housing along a straight connection to FM 2499.
At the candidates forum last night, two candidates - Bob Butler, Place 3 and Tom Hayden, Place 5 - pledged that they would not approve funding for the West Windsor extension. Regardless of your position on the West Windsor extension, I would encourage everyone to vote in the Town Council election on May 9th. This election will replace 3 of the 5 members of the Town Council. With the rapid changes occurring in Flower Mound, it is important to have the right people representing us on the Council.

Council Approves West Windsor Extension
Last night, the Town Council voted unanimously to reverse the decision of Planning & Zoning Commission and approve the West Windsor extension. The option to extend West Windsor Dr to FM 2499 without connecting to Windsor Dr has been added to the Town's Master Transportation Plan.
Thank you to everyone who worked hard against this project. Because of your efforts to inform the community, many residents spoke against this project. Though a few spoke in favor, it was clear the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods were against extending West Windsor. I don't believe that having more signatures on the petition or more people speaking against the project would have swayed the minds of the Council. As the saying goes, you just can't fight City Hall.
Now that it is part of the Master Transportation Plan, the West Windsor extension will be built when the owner develops the property. Given the size of the property and its current zoning for 1 acre lots, the owner felt that building the West Windsor extension through the middle of the property would render it undevelopable. Only time will tell if that is so. Hopefully, we'll have many years to enjoy our area as it is now without the West Windsor extension.

Town Plans Extension to West Windsor Drive
In an effort to shift traffic from 1171, the Town of Flower Mound Transportation Commission has proposed extending West Windsor to meet up with Long Prairie Rd (FM 2499). This will create another entrance into Bridlewood subdivision and change West Windsor Drive from a residential street into a major thoroughfare. This increased traffic will endanger our children who use the trail along this road and reduce the enjoyment of our homes.

Details from Transportation Commission meeting
Thanks to Michael Flores who researched the agenda items from the Transportation Commission meeting on November 11th.
Here is the agenda item recommending the extension of West Windsor (1.5 Mb). Also included is an excerpt from the proposed Master Plan. The relevent portions are highlighted in red.
You can download the full presentation of the Master Plan (15 mb).
This document mentions the reason for proposing the extension of West Windsor is to shift 4500 trips a day from FM 1171 to West Windsor Drive.
Note that a memo to the Town Council dated December 2002 estimates the increased traffic from the West Windsor Extension at 12,000 trips a day.
I have contacted the City for clarification and will post their response.

Would it really save time?
The extension of West Windsor Drive is intended to provide a shortcut to FM 2499 (Long Prairie Rd) for residents of Bridlewood so they can avoid traveling on FM 1171 (Cross Timbers Rd). While it is less direct, exiting via Bridlewood Blvd onto FM 1171 and turning on FM 2499 is only 1.5 miles longer than the direct route to arrive at the same point. Granted with all the construction on FM 1171 and FM 2499, we all want to avoid them lately. But once those additional lanes are opened, I suspect it will be much quicker to use FM 1171 to reach FM 2499 than speeding along a residential street like West Windsor.
